Fun with
Action Figures

Here's part of my collection of beautiful Playmates Star Trek Action Figures.

So far I've used them mainly for comics and music videos.

The next step could be animating them with stop motion technique or AI.

Where no man has gone before

This series of 4 Action Figures shows us Kirk, Spock, Scottie and Sulu from the 2nd pilot.

They are here accompanied by a beautiful figure of Capt. Christopher Pike from Star Trek's 1st pilot 'The cage'.

It is noteworthy that Playmates did not bother to give the figures a younger look, in spite of the fact that our heroes were indeed a lot younger back in those days.

It becomes obvious that this was more about selling the older uniforms than producing accurate versions of the crew.

Kirk, Pike and Sulu are given the usual items set, consisting of a tricorder, phaser and communicator. Scottie comes with a phaser and two engineering tools.

Note that Spock's figure has a Vulcan harp (!) besides the phaser and communicator:

Star Trek - The Original Series (TOS)

Our beloved TOS crew in their standard uniforms! They mostly come with a phaser, tricorder and a communicator, so after a while you'll have a LOT of that.

But these items look quite nice, especially the tricorder.

Dr. McCoy and Nurse Chapel are given an obscure medical device, and Scotty has some engineering tools. The only truly noteworthy item any of the classic figures gets is... Spock's Vulcan harp (but not every Spock figure has it).

There are special editions of Captain Kirk:

Here you see him in one of his gorgeous green wraparound shirts (unfortunately only one of the two styles was turned into a figure).

See the picture below for the figure with the beautiful dress uniform!

No - this is not another transporter glitch...

I wanted to show you how beautifully Playmates designed the older Jim Kirk for their 'Generations' figure set as an older version of the younger figure.

They did not try to imitate the look of the actor who played the role, thus giving us a believable older Jim Kirk figure what is great when you work with them.

This is a beautiful set of Kirk & Spock in environmental suits, of course from the episode 'The Tholian web'.

The helmets can be removed.

There's also a corresponding figure of Chekov in this set, but this one is not yet part of my collection.

Here we see K & S in their suits from 'A Piece of the Action'. The machine guns don't really fit into the figure's hands, and the hats are a bit too large and sit very loosely on the head - ok for posing, but not meant to be played with.

Note: the shirts underneath the jackets are not complete, it's just the part of the shirt that is visible when the figure wears the jacket. Playmates has been a bit too stingy here in my opinion, for the prize a full shirt should have been possible. These are the figures I had altered, s. Workshop-Page for more info.

A beautiful set with Kirk & Spock in 'Amok Time'! Even Kirk's shirt is ripped...

They come with a Lirpa each.

Spock also has a phaser and a cup of... plomeek soup?! And - a Vulcan harp!

Kirk comes with a phaser, a hypospray (!) and a tricorder - although no one ever saw Kirk use one...

This is the set that started it all... my very first Playmates 9" figures of Kirk & Spock, in the beautiful clothing from the episode 'The City on the Edge of Forever'. I love the episode which is an all time classic scifi story, and trek at its best.

Alas, the shirts underneath the jackets also are not complete. So if you want to show them without the jacket, you need to use another - complete - shirt. Fortunately there's a nice red checkered plaid shirt from Big Jim, but I still need to find a suitable grey shirt like Spock's in this set. They have no special extra items besides the usual, but a real treat here is Spock's blue beanie! Love it!

I started working with them on little adventures which took place in my apartment, later I showed them on the Enterprise - in this very set! - and I had a great time. You can find them on my Little Adventures of Jim & Spock page.

I also created comics and videos with this set of figures, they're just so iconic and loveable! If you're interested, check the Comics page and the Music & Videos page!

'Mirror, mirror' is among the truly iconic episodes of Star Trek TOS, and Playmates made these six figures which come with a beautiful stand (see picture on the right side), but when it comes to extra items we get even more phasers... but fortunately also daggers and  - agonizers!? Ok, definitely not meant to be played with by children.

The formal dress uniform of Mirror-Spock looks great, it's a pity Playmates never created one for a 'regular' 9" Spock (at least to my knowledge).

Note: Sulu even has that highly recognizable scar on the right side of his face.

Trelane from the episode 'The Squire of Gothos'.

The figure shows a beautiful resemblance to the actor, William Campbell. Extras include a fencing sword and an old pistol and... a phaser (don't ask me why).

Bele from the episode 'Let that be your last battlefield!'.

The figure comes with everything you need for a decent party! I find it noteworthy that he offers the same bottles and glasses like the Andorian Ambassador Shras (see below).

One of the Talosians from the 1st pilot, 'The Cage'.

It comes with a Talosian viewer, showing us Captain Pike.

A beautiful 12" figure of the Andorian Ambassador Shras from the episode 'Journey to Babel'.

Note: hands, hips and antennae are movable.

One wonders if he just took the bottles and glasses from the Enterprise's reception room?

I just had to have one... a Mugato from TOS! It's a 12" figure by Playmates with practically no articulation whatsoever but who cares :-)

It looks great - and that's all that matters!

Captain Spock and Admiral Kirk

These are highly articulated 12" figures by Playmates, from their 'Wrath of Khan' series.

Unlike their 9" counterparts, these figures have movable hips and rotating hands. Due to their weight and height however they are not so well balanced what makes working with them more difficult.

Although I love the Vulcan salute, it's a pity this is a fixated hand without an alternative.

Spock Prime

This is a very beautiful 12" figure by Playmates, released during the reboot movies of the so-called Kelvin-timeline, in which Spock travels back through time... and meets his younger self. This is the oldest version of Spock available to my knowledge.

Like the figures on the left picture, it has a movable hip and rotating hands.  In addition, its head possesses a much better movability to allow for more poses.

Note: this figure comes with an exchangeable hand to show the Vulcan salute, and it can hold his arms behind his back.

These are among the really expensive collector's items: highly articulated, beautifully sculptured faces, and exquisite extra items.

Spock comes with an extra head (different facial expression), 7 hands (one for the Vulcan salute, of course!) and the usual phaser, tricorder and communicator.

However, the tricorder can be opened up (!) so that the little screen becomes visible, the same goes for the tiny communicator. Excellent!

Captain Kirk also has a spare head with a different facial expression, and 4 extra hands.

Also included are a phaser, a phaser rifle and a communicator.

Both figures are extremely movable and allow for a huge variety of poses.

MEZCO 1:12 / approx. 6,5"

These are two of several versions of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. There are a few 9" Picards in different clothing, and one 12" figure in the dress uniform from the 'Insurrection' movie.

Both give an excellent impression of the actor who played the role, Patrick Stewart.

Data, Miles O'Brian and Geordi LaForge

Star Trek - The Next Generation

These are the items that come with the figures.

Data's been given a little extra in form of a small character card.

The smaller version of Picard comes with the usual phaser and tricorder.

The larger one has a data padd and - for reasons beyond my comprehension - a HUGE Disintegrator Bazooka rifle.

I think these extras should reflect the personality of the character, like Chakotay's medicine bag or Spock's Vulcan harp.

Guinan and Q

This dynamic duo comes with everything you'll need to hold trial... or tend bar!

Again the figures have superb faces, as close to the actors who played them as possible. Great!

Unfortunately however all female 9" figures have rather small feet, so their balance leaves a lot to be desired.

This extremely well designed 9" figure shows Ad'har Ru'afo from the TNG movie 'Insurrection'.

The clothing is simply superb!

It comes with a S'ona rifle, phaser and an attack drone.

Resistance is futile when it comes to Playmates 9" Borg figures! I was thrilled to assimilate them into my figures collective.

They are insanely detailed and absolutely breathtaking! You definitely need more than one of them...

The extra items consist of three small wires, unworthy of a picture if you ask me. I could well have done without  them.

But each figure comes with a highly decorative stand.

Worf in a breathtaking Klingon uniform!

This beautiful figure comes with excellent extra items:

a Klingon disruptor, a knife and a Bat'leth.

One of the best Playmates 9" figures, if you ask me!

This 9" Worf is part of Playmates' 'Insurrection' figures series.

The extra items include a phaser, a huge Disintegrator Bazooka rifle and a tricorder.

An excellent Romulan figure!

Extras are: a Romulan Disruptor, a Disruptor Rifle and a Padd.

I simply love this well sculptured face. Beautiful!

One of my favourite Playmates figures:

A 9" figure of the one and only... Zephrem Cochrane, as portrayed in the Next Generation movie 'First contact'.

His features are very close to the actor who played the role, James Cromwell, and his clothing is superb.

He even brings along a couple of descent looking items.

Captain Kathryn Janeway & Commander Chakotay

The native American Commander Chakotay is my favorite character from the series! Lovely to see his tattoo, and of course he's right next to his beloved Kathryn!

Janeway comes with a phaser, tricorder and a data padd. Oh, and she has a removable braid! Chakotay's been given a phaser and - a medicine bundle!

Star Trek - Voyager

'Please state the nature of the medical emergency!'

Voyager introduced the first holographic character as a regular in the show, the Emergency Medical Hologram or EMH, beautifully played by Robert Picardo.

The figure has quite a good resemblance to the actor. Extras are a tricorder ('Medical tricorder!!'), a hypospray and a dermal scanning device.

Playmates 9" figure of a Jem'Hadar soldier from DS9.

Note the exceptionally beautiful stand, depicting the worm hole.

It comes with a rifle, a handgun and a knife.

Unfortunately Playmates did not bother to give these items any textures.

Star Trek - Deep Space Nine

Plain, simple... Elim Garak!

It's a pity Playmates did not bother to design a better transition between the head and the torso, it could have looked a LOT better.

Clothing however is beautiful! And so is the stand!

This figure comes with a Cardassian padd, rifle, phaser and field control unit. Unfortunately, again these are items without any texture.

Not one of Playmates' best figures but still a good representation of Cmdr. Benjamin Sisko.

This 9" figure comes with a phaser, a tricorder and a data padd.

Playmates' 9" figure of the wonderful Gul Dukat! I just wished they had taken the time to design a better transition from the head to the neck, unfortunately it's quite obvious they just put another head on an existing body model.

Also another sad example of missing textures on the extra items.

Mego's 8" Klingon Capt. Kor

This figure has a remarkable resemblance to the actor, John Colicos.

Capt. Spock & Admiral Kirk from Mego's 'Wrath of Khan' series

These beautiful, highly articulated figures are 8" tall and they come with a phaser and communicator (both can be removed from the belt and taken into hand by the characters).

Note that unlike the Playmates 9" figures, these have rotating hands and movable hips.

Love the Vulcan salute! (Although this hand is fixated without an alternative.)

!!!  G O R N  !!!

I love the Gorn...

These are from BendyFigs, Funko POP and Mego.

In case you ever wondered what these 'glow in the dark accents' might be...

...here's the truth about the Gorn!

This is a very beautiful Spock by Mego, in his Vulcan robe as we saw him in 'The Motion Picture'.

It's another 8" figure.

This remarkable set by Mego features an 8" figure of Spock and several of his uniforms. Besides his regular blue tunic from TOS there's a yellow shirt from the 2nd Star Trek pilot 'Where no man has gone before', a TOS dress uniform and - an exchangeable upper torso turning him into Mirror Spock (!) with the fitting shirt.

Note: there's even another belt with a phaser and communicater from the 2nd pilot!

I found it difficult - not to say impossible - to put on the dress uniform :(

That's because the right hand shows the Vulcan salute, and can't be exchanged with a regular hand. It's simply too large to fit in the dress uniform shirt's sleeve.

You're gonna need another Spock figure with regular hands to put that on.

Here's the triumvirate by Mego with a beautiful Dr. McCoy, who for once wears his medical shirt instead of the usual standard uniform!

... and here he is, a standard uniform Spock by Mego with the usual hands (no Vulcan salute).

He brings along 10 (!) tribbles. He must really love them a lot!

Although I'm not too fond of Mego's Captain Kirk, I got this figure along with a couple of tribbles when I bought a bundle of figures from a seller on eBay.

The only good thing I can say about it is: I love the wraparound shirt!

This 8" Mego figure of Spock was published for Star Trek's 55th anniversary.

It shows us Spock in his blue tunic from 'The Cage', Star Trek's first pilot.

In the 2nd pilot Spock would wear a golden tunic, only to change into another blue tunic for the series.

Mego's 8" Captain Sisko.

He comes with a phaser (yes, that's all...).

A most beautiful and remarkable 8" Romulan figure by Mego!

The uniform is simply superb and of high quality fabric.

The helmet can be removed and reveals a very nice face.

...but the most surprising and highly noteworthy detail about this figure are the feet which are movable!!

Another beautiful 8" Mego Romulan with a different kind of uniform.

Like the figure above is has these remarkable movable feet.

This is one of the most expensive 8" Mego figures I have seen so far, it's an original Klingon from 1974, and I was lucky to get it for a decent price in an unopened box!

Note: it comes with movable feet, like its Romulan counterparts!

<--- FRONT

                                                                                                                                         BACK --->

This truly remarkable 8" Mego figure of Capt. James T. Kirk was published for Star Trek's 55th anniversary in 2021.

It has a beautiful face and actually reminds us of our beloved captain! Finally a valuable Capt. Kirk figure! Thank you so much, Mego!!

Now here comes a real treat:

An original Dr. Leonard McCoy 8" figure by Mego from 1971!

I got it via eBay from an Italian collector for a more than decent price. I am so grateful!

This Dr. McCoy has a beautifully sculptured face, wouldn't you say? That typical Bones look - love it!

A highly detailed 8" Mego Andorian,

Like the Klingons and the Romulans he possesses movable feet.

This highly detailed 6" Locutus figure comes in a very nice display box, it shows it from all sides on the box's outside. It has no articulation, and a remarkable resemblance to Patrick Stewart.

I decided to keep it in there for the time being, you can see the figure very well.

Quantum Mechanix: Locutus

Captain James Tiberius Kirk :-)

Funko POP!

Not exactly action figures, but... lovely.

Khaaaaan!!

A hard-to-come-by Spock with a black cat in his arms! A reference to the TOS episode 'Assignment: Earth!'

Uhura in her 'Mirror'-dress

Mirror Sulu

Now here's a couple of Q-Pop figures:

They come with a pen to write/erase notes on the speech bubble.

Playmobil

A charming little set by Playmobil

Kirk's phaser and McCoy's hypospray can be removed, and Uhura's skirt can move up to allow for a sitting position. This comes in handy when you happen to possess the Playmobil Enterprise set with bridge, so she can actually sit down at her station.
